Chapter 22: Scavenged to the Guts

The babies had grown strong. They didn't cry as much, and their arsenal of weapons had grown as well, thanks to their mysterious benefactor. Joan knew it was Katie, keeping close though she no longer wanted to be a part of their little group.

Time was weird now. No one quite knew what day it was. In truth, the days at the house had blended one into another. Despite the hectic first days where she had tended to the wounded, delivered babies, and then done daily check-ups on those infants, now she had nothing to do. She liked it.

Being a doctor had once thrilled her, had made her feel important in the world. It was easy to feel that way when the people you tended to were complete strangers. If you messed up, they would just disappear. If you couldn't save a life, you didn't have to look everyone who knew them in the face and tell them you had failed. But that's not the way it was now. They all knew each other, sometimes uncomfortably so. If she failed one of them now, she would have to live with the knowledge she had let down the entire group. No one would hold it against her; she was just doing her best, after all. But she knew somewhere in each of them, there would be a little dose of blame, whether they meant it or not.

But she didn't have to worry about that anymore. She hobbled along after the other women, pushing their babies along in strollers that would likely be abandoned as soon as they encountered a knot of impassable traffic. But on that one sunny day, it almost felt like a walk in the park. The sun had brought the heat back, and the rains which had fallen heavy for most of the previous month, had finally disappeared. It was a beautiful day, and they were ten miles away from their destination. Their bags were packed with food, a canned bounty that weighed them all down, but which none of them resented. It would be the only thing that would keep them alive.

The group hobbled down the street. Their wounds and aches and pains had mostly gone away, but there were some things that just couldn't be healed with time. Mort's toes were one of those things. He had a rolling gait now, like he didn't quite trust his feet now that half of his toes were missing. Tejada too walked somewhat stiffly. The muscles in his hip needed to be stretched every day, and even then, he would be shambling like one of the dead by the end of their walk.

Brown walked just fine, but his arm was still useless. Without a complex surgery, it would never be quite functional. And then there was Allen, his remaining fingers wrapped around a baseball bat, a rifle slung over his shoulder. He had come out of nowhere, appearing in the field one day.

Joan didn't know him, but she had heard tales of his exploits.
