Dialogues

"Jimmy, you've gone and done it."

James threw Maud a pained look. "Please don't start calling me Jimmy."

Maud motioned towards a waiter, "Una otra margarita," she asked, and turned back to James. "I can't help calling you that, you are like such a child. You see the forbidden and you want it."

"Let's then agree that I made a mess ─ that I should have listened to Tony, to you, then to some better angel of my nature, if he exists. Let's suppose that I had resisted Ashley or that she had resisted me. There would still be the problem of, how did you call it, her being buried alive."

Maud nodded sadly, "Oh yes, there would still be that."

"Tell me: you are a clever woman, and one hardly needs to be clever to figure the whole thing out. Why did you not tell her about Diego?"

"I tried to hint at it, but she doesn't want to hear it," Maud said simply, shrugging. “She doesn’t want to believe it.”

"She needs to hear it from a friend...a disinterested friend..."

James was looking very earnestly at her, and Maud put her arms on the table and leaned towards him. "And what is your interest in all this? What are you planning to do? Are you planning to stay with her if she leaves her husband, as I agree she should?"

James sighed and played with the fork in front of him. "You need to see, and make her see, that this goes beyond what I want or need. This is about her life, her future. She can't live this charade forever. A person can't only make decisions based on other people, sometimes they need to make a decision that just makes sense!"

Maud was drumming the table with impatient fingers. "You have lived a little, Jim, don't you know that life is never simple? And don't you know what her life has been like? Diego is the only person who has shown her any love, any tenderness."

He looked stubborn. "Then let her be his friend, not his wife."

"It will be like throwing herself into an abyss, especially if you also leave her a little after."

"What does that have to do with anything, haven't I just said..."

"My biscuit, it's not about what makes sense or not, it's about her deep fears. She is with a man who shows her love and affection, and you think she should give that up - and maybe it makes sense to you, but to her it will be frightening. You need to ask her to marry you, or live with you – you’ll probably break out in hives at the very thought, but you need to understand what she has gone through a little."

"She is living a lie and it needs to end, period,” James said decisively.

"Ha! Do you know how many people in the world live lies? I would say the vast majority. There must be a reason behind those numbers!"

An American man with a thin mustache started crooning into a microphone
