Chapter 5

The exam room was stuffy and crammed with students who needed to take a theoretical exam before proceeding to their practical flying lessons. Tanya waited impatiently, drumming on the top of the desk with her long and red fingernails. Leonard Garamond, the senior flight instructor who was overseeing the exam, bobbed on the heels of his feet, looking as anxious as the students themselves. A few flies had managed to get inside the exam room and were buzzing nervously around, trying to land on everyone's faces. The door swung open all of a sudden and Cassie came bursting in holding a pile of papers.

“I'm so sorry!! The printer got jammed again and I had to try and fix it... I'm so sorry!!”

“We've been waiting, Miss Sinfield...” said Leonard, looking like a stern headmaster at her.

“I know, I know, but I do not control the printer, Mr. Garamond,” she replied handing him the pile of papers. They contained the exam questions for each of the students.

“Don't give them to me! Since you're already here and very late, hand them out!” Leonard barked at her.

She nodded and started handing out the papers. As she moved across the exam room, sweat dripping from her forehead, she noticed with horror that Tanya's hand shot in the air.

“Yes, Miss Moe?” asked Leonard.

“It's Moeé, but that's fine. I would like to make a complaint about the exam starting so late.”

Her words rang across the room and everyone turned to look at her. Cassie froze with the papers in her hand.

“I'm sorry? A complaint?” asked Leonard.

“Yes. This kind of mistake is not acceptable. There are people waiting to take a very important exam. Most of us have very busy schedules and we cannot waste time waiting for her. This situation needs to be addressed.”

Leonard was clearly at a loss for what to say. He looked at Cassie.

“I told you! The printer was jammed. What could I have possibly done??” she said.

“That is no one's concern but yours. If you cannot handle this job, you shouldn't be doing it,” replied Tanya in a cold tone. “Mr. Garamond, I expect the proper measures to be taken after today. Thank you.”

Leonard nodded.

“Yes. I will discuss this matter with Miss Pitout and Mr. Fields and I will see that Miss Sinfield is properly reprimanded.”

Cassie went red in the face as everyone stared at her. When she reached Tanya's desk, the girl grinned at her and whispered:

“I hope you had a great time at the funfair...”

“I really think the funfair was amazing, don't you?”

Tanya stared in silence as Lily filled her glass with champagne and drank half of it in one go.

“That's because you were drunk,” the girl answered. “Everything seems fun when you're drunk.”

“Yeah, I know. But wasn't it funny how that guy in the pink suit thought we were the queens of the fair or something or that we should have sat on top of the manure pile?” she giggled madly like a little girl.

“No! It wasn't. It was disgusting!” Tanya snapped.
