âShit, Iâm so drunk.â Chloe draped herself over me as we trudged toward some overturned tree trunks away from the chaos.
âArenât you drunk?â She peeked up at me through her smudged lashes.
âNo, I stopped after a couple more beers.â When your mom was an alcoholic, it kind of turned you off the whole getting wasted thing.
âNoooo, you need to loosen up. Get drunk and make out with one of those cute zombie football players.â
âI think thatâs your dream, not mine.â I chuckled. âSpeaking of⦠heâs coming over here.â
âWho?â She whipped her head up, almost slipping over the trunk. âWhoa, that was close.â
âClo,â Maddox said, looming over us. He was big for a sophomore, already packing some serious muscle.
âGo away, Maddox,â she murmured, waving him off.
âNot gonna happen, Clover.â
âItâs okay,â I said. âIâll watch out for her.â
âIâm taking her home.â
âLike hell you are.â She leaped up, getting all up in his face. âYou havenât spoken a single word to me all night and now you think you can just swoop in and play hero? Newsflash, buddy.â She jabbed her finger in his chest. âI donât want to play your games.â
âWest,â Kyeâs voice made her bristle. âTake my sister home.â
âDonât start, Kye. Iâve had enough ofââ
Maddox bent down and scooped her up, throwing her over his shoulder and stalked off toward the cars littered on the other side of the trees.
âGuess I wonât be riding home with Chloe,â I mumbled, my fingers curling into the rough bark.
âCome on,â Kye said. âBefore Nix comes over here and goes all caveman on you too.â
Yeah, right.
Like that would ever happen after tonight.
But it wasnât like I had anywhere else to go. With Chloe gone, I was alone.
We walked back to the party in awkward silence. Couples had begun to pair off, hidden in the shadows, pressed close, touching and moaning. Others danced, wild and free, embracing the night of mischief and mayhem.
They made it look so easy, so fun.
It had never felt that way to me. But I was beginning to think that maybe Nix was right. Maybe I was wired wrong.
âWhat happened earlierââ
âIt doesnât matter.â Marc Denby was nobody to me. I cared less about the way he manhandled me and more about the way Nix had refused to look at me. As if I disappointed him⦠or disgusted him.
âI think Iâm just gonna go,â I blurted out, toying nervously with the hem of my cropped tee. Iâd felt good leaving the trailer in my Harley Quinn costume. Sexy even. But ever since seeing Nixâs reaction, Iâd felt like nothing more than a fool.
âYeah, right. As if Wilder is going to let you leave with some douchebag.â
My brows crinkled. After the way Nix had treated me all night, why would he care who I left with?
Kye studied me, his lips quirking. âYou two really are clueless sometimes.â
âWhatââ
âYo, Carter,â Zane called. âWeâre leaving.â
âWe are?â
âYeah, got some shit to take care of across town.â He flashed us a wolfish smirk.
âFuck yes. We can drop B off first, right?â
âYeah, whatever.
