Chapter Six

Oh my heavens. Tessa had known Jack Wheeler was sexy as all get-out, but the way he'd kissed her cheek…. Her heart was still flip-flopping even after she got back to the suite she was sharing with her mom and Trudy.

"Tessa," Sophie said, her eyes resembling a googly-eyed doll as she closed the door of the suite behind her. "He's ... whoa. Right, Mom?" Sophie asked, and Laura giggled as the women made themselves comfortable on the plush couches of the living room in their suite.

The room was perfect for Tessa, her mom, and Trudy with its three bedrooms and accompanying baths. The suite had recently been redesigned by Emma and her crew to have a farmhouse appeal. The dark wood floors were covered by a bright white and gray rug that perfectly matched the gray couches. A big brass clock hung on one wall while another was full of expansive windows that let in the gorgeous view of the mountains and snow covered trees surrounding the resort.

"If I were a few years younger and he wasn't already besotted with you …" Laura said, pumping her eyebrows.

Tessa groaned. "Mother!"

"What? He's a beautiful man who works the land," Laura said.

Sophie scrunched her nose. "Is that politically correct to say?" she asked.

Laura threw up her hands. "If it isn't, it should be. Anyway, he's rugged, handsome, and knows how to work hard. Those kind of men are few and far between."

Sophie nodded in solidarity, and even Trudy seemed to agree.

"Okay. I get it. I landed a great date. Now can we talk about something else?" Tessa asked. Anything else. She already had her own nerves when it came to going out with Jack Wheeler. She didn't need to feel her family’s expectations along with that.

Besides, she might only be in Blue Falls for another week. That thought hit her with a major depression. And it wasn't just the idea of leaving Jack that was sad; it was much more than that. She wasn't thrilled about what she was going back to or who and what she was leaving. She'd fallen hard for Blue Falls, and she had almost forgotten how carefree and relaxing it could be to be surrounded by family.

And if she was being completely honest with herself, although they'd scared her for the first few minutes, she was feeling more and more intrigued by horses. So much so, in fact, that she'd scheduled a ride at the Heathcliff barn the next day before her date.

"I get it. You don't want to jinx it, and it's a first date," Sophie said. "But one last thing, Tess. Just ... I've never seen you this way about a guy. Being willing to go on a date without scientifically calculating your compatibility even with all that you believe about love? You've never ..."

Sophie didn't need to finish that thought. Tessa had been very vocal about her opinion on love for years and hadn't said anything to let her family know that her feelings on the topic had been slowly but surely changing.
