Chapter Eighteen

Cyrus stood up, buttoned his pants, and began walking through the church. He had no idea where Lucy had gone. He saw a flicker of candlelight and followed it to the main room of the building. Inside, he saw groups of people sitting on the floor. Lucy was rocking a baby in her arms. She looked like the Madonna, and he wondered what had gotten into him. He had plenty of women in his life—before the war, then overseas, and again when he returned home. But this one had a strange hold on him, unlike anyone he’d ever met before, and he didn’t want to leave her behind.

She turned and smiled at him. Sitting there with the tiny child in her arms, its face covered with a wet cloth to prevent the dust from getting into its tiny lungs, she looked nothing like the wanton woman he just made love to. She looked almost angelic.

What the hell is the matter with me, he thought, as he lowered himself to a sitting position on the floor in the corner.

“Welcome, son,” the preacher said, walking over to Cyrus.

“Thank you.” Cyrus struggled to answer, feeling guilty for having sinned by having sexual relations in a house of God.

Why can’t I be a good man?

“There is some food on the table over there. Not much, I’m afraid. But whatever we have, you are welcome to it,” the preacher said.

Cyrus was hungry. Very hungry. Yet he felt that he did not deserve to take advantage of the generosity and kindness of this preacher. So, instead, he sat alone in the corner listening to his stomach rumble. His mind was racing out of control. He felt certain that he should get away from Lucy as soon as the storm ended. He could hear a little voice inside his head telling him to break his promise and leave her in Oklahoma. The voice said, “Get away from her as soon as possible.” And yet he knew beyond the shadow of doubt that he would ignore that voice because the truth was that he wanted her again. Wanted her more than he ever wanted any woman.

He got up from the floor where he was sitting and stretched and walked over to Lucy. When she looked up at him and a sweet smile came over her face, he could not see any trace of the serpent-woman he just had intercourse with.

“Ain’t he just the sweetest little thing you ever seen?” Lucy cooed at the baby in her arms. “This here is Stella Johnson’s little boy.”

“Yeah, he’s cute,” Cyrus said, watching Lucy with the baby and wondering what it was about her that made her so attractive to him. He’d seen pretty girls before, and he’d even had some wild sex before. So why was he so taken with this one?

“This here is Stella Johnson. Stella this is my friend, Cyrus.” Lucy made the introductions.

“Nice to make your acquaintance,” Stella said. “This sure is one evil storm, ain’t it?”

“Wicked,” Lucy said, hiding a smirk and shaking her head.
