It takes me all of Saturday and Sunday to fit the new cameras and work out the apps that go with them. By Monday morning, I’m groggy with a hangover. These days, I need to drink red wine to help me sleep. It’s the only thing that works.

“Are you all right?” Nathan asks. For once, he seems genuinely concerned.

“Do I look that bad?” I don’t need him to answer that—I already know I look terrible.

He shakes his head, but his eyes have trouble meeting mine. I can see he feels guilty about all this. We’re in the conference room. He’s paranoid about us being alone in his office together, and to be honest, I get it. I don’t want to do anything extra that could potentially raise questions about us, especially since I’m still suspicious about everyone in this office anyway.

The shades are drawn, but Nathan is still handsome under the subdued lighting. His arm rests on the surface of the table, his fingers laced together. His expression remains somewhat pained.

“Did you give your statement to the police?” I ask.

He nods. “This morning. Over the phone.”

I sigh. I can tell from Nathan’s demeanor that Briggs and Calypso haven’t contacted Angela yet. It’s only a matter of time before they do, and now I need to break the bad news. “I’m sorry about all this, Nathan.”

His eyes reach mine. “You don’t have anything to be sorry about, Lucy.”

I see someone walk by the door, so I pretend to be inspecting a document that I’ve brought in here. The papers are just for show, to make it appear as though we’re working on something. We don’t know where to go to talk alone. It seems like nowhere is private anymore. Not even my own house.

“I have some bad news to break to you,” I say. “The police… they’re going to want to speak to Angela. Someone stole the bracelet from my wrist and delivered it back to me in a gift box.”

“What?”

“Yeah. It’s messed up. But the thing is… I sat next to Angela all night and—”

“It wasn’t her,” he snaps.

I lift a palm to calm him. “I’m not saying she did it. I’m saying that she’s a suspect because of us sitting together.”

He rakes his fingers through his hair. “So this is it. This is the end of my marriage.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop saying that,” he chides.

“Okay, I will. To be honest, Nathan, she knows anyway. She spent the whole night talking about you and whether you’re having an affair. She even asked me to be her eyes and ears in the office. It was awful. I didn’t know what to say.”

“She did?” His eyes widen. “God. I had no idea.”

“Then Janine got drunk and flirted with you, which didn’t help matters.”

“So she thinks I’m screwing Janine?” He laughs. “You can’t make this up.”

“I wish we’d made this up.” I rub my upper arms, thinking about the doorbell video. I showed it to Nathan this morning. It has been a wakeup call for me.
