Chapter Thirteen

Gray

I felt like crap. Beyond crap. I padded across the room and climbed into bed. Jack had offered to hang with me, him and the baby. The guys were doing whatever it was they did for a job. That was very unclear.

At first, I assumed they were some sort of military or police type. But that was very obviously not the case. They were not only without badges and the correct equipment, but from some little things I overheard, they didn’t exactly play by the rules.

My second guess was that they were some sort of mafia slash organized crime group. Vigilante and all of that. But if that were the case, why did they rescue us? Wouldn’t the bad guys try to profit off us?

I rolled onto my side, and a searing pain shot up my flank, like my skin was bing yanked off me almost. It sucked, but then again, a lot of the pains that went along with pregnancy sucked. It was the way it was.

Closing my eyes, I rubbed my side until the pain subsided and then attempted to get to sleep. Every time I thought I might possibly be able to drift off, another pain would hit.

It hurt, and it had me worried. I wasn’t far enough along to have this baby, but also, my symptoms felt suspiciously like labor. What little I knew of it. It wasn’t like they educated us while we were here.

A half hour into my “nap,” I gave up. I wasn’t going to sleep like this, and maybe one of them would be able to help me figure out if I should be worried or not.

I found them in the kitchen watching the coffeepot do its thing, mugs in hand.

“Out of coffee?” I asked, and they all looked at me.

The only one not in the room was Hammer. It was unfair of me to expect him to drop everything for me…unfair to both of us.

“Someone forgot to brew a new pot when they took the last cup.” King elbowed Pop-Tart.

“Just because you don’t consider half a cup enough, doesn’t mean I left it empty.”

Everyone else groaned.

“You all suck.” He rolled his eyes and then looked toward me. His face dropped. “What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know. I keep getting this weird sharp pain in my side.” I showed them where. “I don’t know what it is. I thought maybe labor, but wouldn’t that be all over?”

All the alphas looked straight to Jack as if he held all the answers in the world. And, in this case, he probably did hold more than they did, given he was the only one in the room with kids.

“When I was in labor, it wasn’t like that. I never experienced anything like you are describing except when I was running stupid track and field in stupid high school gym class because I got denied swimming class because it was full.”

I wasn’t sure if he was trying to lighten the mood or if he was still that pissed at high school, but I didn’t get to ask for clarity, the pain running up me again.
