Chapter Five

“That was a delicious dinner,” Valeria exclaimed as her plate was taken away from her.

“I am glad you enjoyed it,” the Comte said. “I always think that this is one of the best places in Biarritz, although it is not as popular as some of the larger restaurants in the town.”

“I am fascinated by Biarritz,” Valeria commented, “and I have been reading its history.”

“I thought you would,” the Comte replied. “It surprises me, however, that you should be so well-read and intelligent, considering the life you lead.”

Valeria was not certain what he meant by that and so she replied,

“I think now I should go to the hotel. I am sure that Tony will worry if he comes back and finds that I am not there.”

“I doubt if he will return before the early hours,” the Comte said dryly. “But, of course, if that is what you wish, I will take you back to your hotel now.”

He sent for the bill which, Valeria noticed, he signed and then they left the restaurant.

She wondered if he lived in Biarritz, but thought it would be a mistake to ask personal questions.

Instead, as they drove away towards the hotel, she said,

“There is one thing that I must see while I am in Biarritz and that is the foam from the breakers. I believe that they are always there whatever the weather.”

“That is true,” the Comte said, “and it is a very beautiful sight. So I will take you to see them tomorrow.”

Valeria gave him a quick glance.

“Tomorrow?” she questioned.

“I am asking you to have luncheon with me,” the Comte answered, “and then I will take you to see the waves, which are even more spectacular and far more beautiful for you to watch than the Can-Can.”

Valeria felt that there was almost a reproof in the comparison and she said quickly,

“I am not sure what – Tony and I will be – doing tomorrow.”

“Your friend is naturally included in the invitation,” the Comte replied, “but I have the feeling that he will be otherwise engaged.”

Valeria looked at him in surprise.

Then, because she had only just thought of it, she remarked,

“Perhaps his – friends who were giving – the party will ask him to be – with them.”

“In which case I sincerely hope that you will be with me.”

“It is very kind of you to invite me,” Valeria answered him, “but surely you have many engagements already for tomorrow?”

“As I mentioned earlier in the evening,” the Comte replied, “I came to Biarritz to see my Diplomatic friend as we had a number of things to discuss. Now that he has deserted me, I am on my own and I can only beg you to take pity on me.”

Valeria laughed.

“That sounds very plausible, but I am sure that you have many friends in the town who would be delighted to see you.”

“Only if you refuse me,” the Comte insisted.

As he spoke, the horses drew up outside the hotel.

“So this is where you are staying,” the Comte said.
