CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Being without the shop and the business was an odd sort of relief to Polly. She had thought it was important to her, because it was something that she had done herself, with her own talent; but she discovered that she had less need now to prove herself. She was Ren Alexanderâs wife, which was a source of envy to most people. He was rich and handsome, and he was âgoing placesâ: in this thrusting, ambitious country that was something to admire, whereas at home, she thought, you were more admired for being somewhere and staying there.
The extent of the envy was illustrated to her when at a literary luncheon in January 1928 she met Olga Graham, who gripped her shoulder with a claw-like hand and said, âMy God, itâs little Mrs Renfrew H. Alexander! I canât believe youâve managed to hang on to that dangerous man for â how long is it?â
âWeâve been married nearly three years, Mrs Graham.â
âOh, my child, itâs not Mrs Graham any more! I divorced Benny last fall. Iâm on my third, now. Iâm Mrs William J. Culver.â
Polly didnât know whether to congratulate or commiserate, and made a neutral murmur.
Olga divined her difficulty and said, âNobody stays married to number one any more. Fidelity is such a bore! Thatâs why I canât get over the fact that I havenât heard any rumours about the glorious Mr A â not one! What on earth is your secret? You look as though butter wouldnât melt in your mouth, but you must be as hard as nails underneath to hang on to him. I hear youâve sold your business.â She laughed in a glittering sort of way. âWhat a shame! No more special gowns for me at cut prices!â
Polly had never given her a cut price, but did not point this out. âI hadnât time for it, with all our other commitments.â
âOh, donât tell me! Herbert Hooverâs making his big play, and Renâs quite his blue-eyed boy. Youâll find it mighty expensive funding Hooverâs campaign for him. Ren may be a millionaire, but a million doesnât go far in a presidential campaign.â
âRen isnât paying for the campaign,â Polly said, slightly shocked by the implication that it was for his money that Hoover patronised her husband.
Olga swiftly changed stance. âOf course not, dear. Iâm just saying it comes expensive. Not that it isnât an investment, in a way. But if anyone can lay his hands on the money, itâs your hubby. If thereâs a banker he doesnât know, Iâve never heard about it. Unless thatâs why he made you sell your baby? Maison Polly, I mean.â Her eyes raked Polly up and down. âSkinny as ever, my dear. No sign of any other sort of baby. But I suppose you donât have time. It canât be through any lack of devotion from Mr A, because I know I would have heard about it if he was straying. Still, thereâs always time. The White House has its own allure, and youâll have a harder job keeping him once heâs in there all day without you.
