CHAPTER 20
The white room was becoming familiar. This time the door was open onto what I assumed was a corridor, but I couldnât see much apart from the occasional person walking past. No one stopped to look in, or even slowed as they went. I tried calling out, but theyâd jabbed me with a needle of something which made me weak and my head fuzzy. My arms and legs were restrained, but with my body full of whatever theyâd dosed me with, I could hardly raise a finger. I could just barely roll my eyes left or right.
I was vaguely aware of lying cold and naked on what felt like a surgical table. Evie was lying on the one beside me. Iâd been held down while they dosed and restrained her first. The rage and murderous thoughts were a combination of Brettâs and mine. Brett might deserve abduction and mistreatment, but Evieâs only crime was being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And having bad taste in men.
âI suppose youâre wondering âwhy me?â â Kevinâs face came into view above me. âItâs a fair question. Normally I wouldnât waste time with oxygen thieves like you. Youâre too dumb to be much use to us here. If it were up to me, Iâd have cut your throat, tossed you out of the van and left your girlfriend out of this.â
I struggled to talk, to threaten or plead with him. No words would come. I couldnât do more than move my lips and grunt.
Apparently, Kevin found this amusing. He chuckled softly. âI like it when I leave people speechless. Anyway, where were we? Oh yeah, âwhy me?â Okay then. So, my boss is rich and powerful, you know the type. Itâs something you could never have been anyway. Although, if youâd stuck to being a mechanicâanyway, you shot the wrong kid. Sam Wells was my bossâs nephew.â
For me, it all fell into place. Brett however, needed more explanation. Kevin went on. âMy boss really doesnât like it when people kill his relatives, so he asked me to look into it. Sam was a good kid, so I was only too happy to help. Luckily his place of employment had CCT cameras installed, so I got to see your deed in all its glory. You acted on impulse. I can appreciate that. Impulse isnât a bad thing. It makes people fall in love and go bungee jumping. Personally, I avoid things like leaping off cliffs; too risky.â
He took a few steps away. I had to roll my eyes to follow him.
âI guess you guys thought you were clever, wearing masks? Thing is, there was CCT footage of you both all the way to your car. If you werenât so dumb, you would have blacked out the plates. Tracing those to Johnny was simple. Getting him to spill his guts was even easier. You need to pick better friends. Did you know he was sleeping with your ex? No? He wasnât really, I just like to joke around sometimes.
