Chapter Five

JoJo

“And there he was, kissing me.” She jerked a gown over a white, headless mannequin.

“Easy, the dress didn’t do anything to you.” Haley reached to steady the fake bride. “You know he was here last night talking to Cole about you.”

“Really? What did he say?”

Haley recounted Cole’s version of Buck’s story. And it sounded like the one Jo knew. The one about the kiss and the thinks.

“I can’t believe he talked to Cole about me.”

“Why not? You’re talking to me about him. Jo, it’s Buck Mathews. Your Buck. The one you’ve loved since ninth grade.”

“He’s not my Buck. And I didn’t love him. Just liked him a lot. Besides, he was different then.”

“You mean not a superstar.” When the bells on the door clattered, Haley walked over to the mezzanine railing. “Afternoon, Mr. Drew. Just leave the mail on the counter.”

“How can his fame and fortune not change him? Change his perspective?” JoJo hoisted the fiberglass form and started down to the grand salon. The new gown from Bray-Lindsay was another upgrade for the shop, a bit more on the ritzy side.

JoJo had suggested displaying the gown under the beautiful Christmas lights instead of waiting for spring.

“Some girl will get engaged this season and want to go shopping right away.”

“You’re getting good at this bridal shop business.”

All part of the plan.

“So you didn’t like the kiss but you liked the song?” Haley followed Jo with a pair of white gloves.

“Who said I didn’t like the kiss?” Jo set the mannequin between the window and the tree. “I loved the song. It’s beautiful. I gave them one line, and they gave me a third of the credit. ‘A third for a word,’ Buck said.”

“One word, one kiss, and you’re joining the family business.” Haley slipped the first glove on one of the posed hands. “What do you think? Too much? But the sleeves are short, so I think it works.”

“Try the fingerless lace instead. More elegant. And I’m not joining the family business.”

“If you ask me,” Haley said over the rhythm of her heels striking the hardwood, “he kissed you for no reason.”

“I’m not asking you.” She angled forward a bit to see the glove Haley held up. “Yes, that one. The design matches the bodice. He kissed me because he’s lonely and nostalgic.”

“Oh, please,” Haley scoffed as she handed one glove to JoJo. “I’ve learned a lot about men since I married, and he kissed you for no reason.”

“What world are you living in? Men kiss women all the time for no reason.”

“Not girls like you.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” She slid the glove over the poised hand. Girls like her. Was she special? The kind of girl a guy treated differently? Not in her experience. “What do you think? I like it.”

Haley stood back to inspect before nodding her approval. “Me too. And Buck kissed you because you’re a woman of substance. The kind a man wants to take home to his mother. How convenient you were already at his mother’s house.
