Back in the main room, Dunrae appeared asleep as they returned. Marei knew he wasn’t. She sat poised with questions and accepted another cup of wine. Where to start?

“Why would you help us, even if you know about our situation? Can you get me inside the Hall? I need to see my son. And what about the babe?” Marei asked, rushing her questions, her tired mind unravelling as anguished thoughts crisscrossed through her head.

Randle and the cat were staring at her. There was something peculiar about that cat. Maybe it was the wine, but the animal seemed to read her thoughts, too. She shuddered, gazed down at her drink, and fiddled the mug through her fingers.

“Well …?” she pressed.

“Your brave knight, Sir Garland, will find the Kaa and save the child,” Randle said quietly. “I’ve no doubt of that. He’s crossed already and has … aid from an unlikely source. The Journeyman—that’s what we call him—will endure because he has to. Rosey’s girl will be fine. The Kaa are not invincible. But rescuing Dalreen is only the first of many hurdles you’ll have to overcome to defeat them. Tarn here can help with Dafyd. He knows how to navigate Graywash Hall better than most.”

Marei turned and stared at the big man. He was snoring soundly, his head slumped back in the armchair. The cat was still watching her. Marei ignored it and returned her weary gaze to the miller. “What are you proposing? Tell me about this strategy of yours.”

“I’ll keep it simple to begin with. Rosey stays here where she’s safe.”

“No way. This man told me this city isn’t safe. I’ll not part with my daughter-in-law.”

“You have to. Rosey cannot go near Graywash Hall. They’ll sense her desperation and alert the Kaa. And don’t worry about the people outside this house. My property lies in a different dimension from the city. They can’t get in here.”

“Then why bother barring the door?”

“A habit of ours—we’re old school.” He smiled, arched his fingers again. “Be patient and I’ll try to explain. Enjoy the wine—it’s good, isn’t it? Help you relax.” He sighed and gazed at the cat. “How do I start, Fenglegrim? You could help me.” Marei saw the cat switch its gaze to the man and back again, the yellow-green eyes probing into hers.

“I don’t like your cat,” Marei said, shuddering and staring hard at the fire.

“Ha, did you hear that, Grim? She doesn’t mean it. You always upset them. You know too much, that’s your problem. She has two names, you know. One for each soul. Camfaleese Fenglegrim is not your average cat.”

“What about my son?”

For an answer, he stood and walked over to the fire, his chubby face serious for once. The cat purred loudly and hopped across, jumping up onto the sleeping man’s lap, its uncanny gaze still on Marei. Again, she ignored the animal.

“There are things happening you’ll never grasp, Marei. Ancient events and the reactions countering those events. The cycle repeats itself, time and again. The worm-eaten thread never stops spinning.
