“I WILL GO WITH YOU,” ANNABEL ANNOUNCED, UPON Gabriel’s somewhat tentative announcement, following Jessie’s tea party, that he intended to take two hundred head of cattle to Fort Duffield. He had escorted her back to the ranch, even stooping to drive the surrey personally, and opened the front door for her like a gentleman.

Next thing, she decided, a little wryly, he’d be taking tea of an afternoon.

“No, Annabel,” he replied, as quietly adamant as ever. He did not even trouble himself to add an explanation; on that ranch, his word was law, and he expected her to obey him as readily as any one of the hands.

Inside, she unpinned her favorite feathered hat and set it aside, noting with no little satisfaction that Gabriel’s gaze followed the rise and fall of her breasts as she lifted and lowered her arms in the process. “I shall not be dissuaded,” she said, tugging off her gloves. “I have business in Fort Duffield.”
