But when that giddiness wore off, there was still the matter of Astrid killing an undisclosed amount of earthlings to deal with. So, Noah made his way to the golden elevator for an emergency meeting.

Passing by his throne, he felt a set of arms slide into his elbow. Bean clung to him as usual. Noah glanced at her. She smiled sheepishly.

“[Proposal:] Hope you don’t mind if I tag along,” she said. “If it’s some kind of ultra-top-secret affair I can’t join, I’ll understand.”

“Beanie, the fact that you’ve set foot in the Myth Archive puts you at the highest clearance level by default. Besides, I could use the company.”

“Is that so? Then lead on, My King.”

Noah smiled enough for it to hurt.

He wasn’t too sure what his relationship with Bean could be called, and neither was Bean. Whether or not they were officially “dating” was anyone’s guess. But when they were next to each other, everything that followed felt natural. Every administrative decision Noah made felt a twinge easier. Every target practice session for Bean’s weapons system was a few ticks more accurate.

If you forced either of them to give their little arrangement a label, it would probably have been “friends, but there’s smooching involved.” But was there any need for a label? Bean knew she was exactly where she needed to be.

They got off the golden elevator at the floor labeled with a seven-pointed star instead of a number. The office of the Imperial Septagram no longer formally existed, but this silly little war room was still the coolest conference room in the whole empire, so why not use it for its proper purpose?

Noah slid into his old slot on the seven-cornered table. The only other person in their proper slot was the AKSL commander, Leona.

As for the rest of ’em:

- Era was napping in the Army’s corner.

- Liv sat in the Navy’s corner and scrawled a few four-letter words in the enamel with a knife. (Her right foot and Era’s left were gently dueling each other the whole time.)

- Titania casually sipped a glass of pure ethanol in the Templars’ corner.

- Norris nervously folded his hands in the Air Force’s corner.

- Ofelia glared at Era for sleeping from the Bureau of Secrets’ corner.

- Clive sat in a shadowy corner of the room with his little stenography kit.

- And finally, Bean sat in a little chair behind Noah.
