Chapter 14

Albert moved like the wind, his boots barely touching the runway as he made his way across the length of tarmac. His target was a group of dumpsters, brimming over with garbage. As he moved deftly, his mind lingered on the kiss he had shared with Gee, and how their relationship had progressed forward rapidly—despite his thinking it was a bad idea.

Must be all the emotional upheaval, he told himself as the black-clad mercenaries waved away a couple of airport workers looking at the top of the range private jet in their hanger. His goal was to get as close as he could, but his thoughts were all on Gee. Fuck. Head in the game, Albert, he chided himself.

His run transitioned from tarmac to grass and back again as he ran to his cover, making sure his MP-5 was ready to fire. As he passed the edge of the hanger, he could only see the human mercenaries, which meant any vampire overseers were either in the plane or an office somewhere on site… or out hunting.

He slid to a stop behind a putrid-smelling dumpster and checked his watch. It was nearly an hour until the time they had asked him to be here. He stilled himself to listen; there was only the odd raised voice of annoyance coming from their targets, so he readied himself, making sure his pistol and machine gun were ready to fire. The MP-5 shot selector was moved to the three round burst, then finally, the safety switch was clicked off. It was time.

Jasper and Gee lay six feet apart on the grassy rough ground, with a chilly evening breeze flowing over them. Their rifle barrels were sticking through the chain link fence and spare magazines laid next to their weapons, ready for a quick re-load. They had just watched the blur that was Albert Morris run across the total distance to the hanger in a blink of an eye.

“Gee!” Jasper called out, a little louder than normal.

Gee kept her focus on watching Albert through her telescopic sight. “What?”

“Your Mom runs your coven, right?” Jasper asked, as he watched for the signal from Albert.

Gee let out a large huff. “Yes, you knew that already,” she said, wanting nothing better than to kick the man near her. “Why?”

“Well, my point is, you’re part of a coven, and the vampires have their own group which is also called a coven,” Jasper said. He shot a quick glance at the woman next to him, making sure she hadn’t turned her weapon on him. He had a talent for annoying the ladies. He saw her turn her head slightly towards him. “So, what I’m asking is, who owns the name ‘coven’, is it you, or the vamps?”

Gee shook her head. “We’re just about to wage war on a bunch of mercenaries, who have been employed by a group of bloodthirsty vampires, who only yesterday wiped out a lot of our friends,” she seethed, “and you have chosen this precise moment to ask such a stupid question?!”

Inside, Jasper chuckled like a child.
