CHAPTER TEN

Cole stood up and started pacing around the room. He and Ava needed to have this conversation. They should’ve had it long ago. If they had, maybe they wouldn’t be in this situation now.

“You regret marrying me, Ava? Is that what you’re saying?” He kept his tone even, managing to keep the anger at bay.

He rested his hand on brick mantle below the television, right next to a photo that had been taken at one of the first events they’d attended together. Looking at it now, seeing the way Ava was smiling up at him, like he was the most amazing person she knew, he couldn’t, no; he wouldn’t believe she regretted their marriage.

“I’m not saying I regret it. But I can’t help thinking of that old saying marry in haste, repent at leisure. Perhaps we shouldn’t have rushed down the aisle. Perhaps we should’ve taken a little more time to get to know each other.”

“I didn’t need any more time. We had been seeing each other for quite a few months before we married. I wouldn’t say we rushed into marriage.”

He recalled the moment Ava announced they were going to have a baby. Initially he’d been shocked. Wondering how on earth it had happened, considering they’d been so careful. But then again, he knew accidents occurred and the idea of settling down and becoming a father appealed to him.

Prior to meeting Ava, he’d been getting jaded with the women parading themselves in front of him. Then, like a breath of fresh air, Ava crossed his path. He’d known the moment he’d seen her he’d wanted her. And nothing and no one would stand in his way.

“We can’t change the past, Cole. But we can ensure the future is the right one for both of us. Maybe staying together isn’t the right future for us.”

The last thing Cole would accept was a failed marriage. He never failed at anything. He knew, given time, he could make Ava realize they belonged together, not apart.

“And maybe staying together is. We never really did give our marriage a fair go, did we?”

“Why is this so important to you, Cole?”

“Because I meant my vows when I said them. Didn’t you?”

Ava opened her mouth and closed it again. For the first time since they started this conversation, Cole wondered if Ava really did want their marriage to end. The thought hadn’t even crossed his mind. Some would say he was stupid to think he and Ava belonged together. However, he truly believed in their marriage and that they were meant for each other.

Some would tell him he loved Ava. He would call it compatibility with a healthy dose of sexual attraction. His parents had let the world believe they were in love and were soul mates. But he knew differently. He knew his father had an affair and his mother had forgiven him. For some reason they had decided to stay together. In the end, they’d reached a compatibility where they’d admired and cared deeply for each other.
