“What exactly are you going to be up to while I’m gone?”

“Minding my own business,” Kennan told him. “And yours too. So, go, have a good time, and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

“Which pretty much gives me free reign, yes?”

“Of course.” Kennan grinned. “Would I put chains on my own son?”

“No, daddy-o, you certainly would not.”

“Give us a kiss, darling.”

“Don’t you dare cry, mother,” Bastien ordered, to no avail as fat tears dripped from his mother’s big blue eyes. “I’m going to cry if you don’t quit that. Do you want me humiliated? I’ve been completely outdone by mothers lately.”

She’d enjoyed the story of him caught outside Peada’s window like a troubadour. Now she laughed and gave him a huge hug and kiss. “I’ll miss you.”

Bastien kissed the top of her head and picked her up for another squeeze. “Not as much as I’ll miss you. I’ll call you from the road, yeah?”

“Be careful,” she whispered.

He walked off the front porch, blew her a kiss and waved. Then he vanished.

Alisha stared wistfully at the space where her only child had just stood. “What’s going to happen, Kennan?”

“Not a damn thing if I have my way, mother.”
