In full disclosure, I’ve turned to my own dogs for help now and then over the years. One summer night, Theo, an irascible and headstrong miniature wire-haired dachshund with boisterous eyebrows, shot off like a bullet during a thunderstorm and didn’t return. After the rain let up, our family called and searched and splashed through puddles. Lily, then eleven years old, our second daughter and fourth child, could barely sleep or eat during Theo’s absence. “Where is he?” she kept asking everybody. “But where do you think he is?”

“THEO!!!” she cried into the night. We hiked in the woods and we walked around the neighborhood, tacking up flyers. Naturally we turned for help to Theo’s longtime companion, Franny, a plump, freckled, well-intentioned rat terrier.
