Billy’s parents came over tonight. Mother told us boys to go play outside so the grown-ups could talk. Later, they called us in to tell us, because of the financial depression, Billy’s mother and father were going to have to go to another city and find work. They said Billy was going to be part of our family, and we would just all have to make the best of it. I know Billy will miss his family while they’re gone, but I think this is great.

Alexia turned the page and spoke thoughtfully. “Can you imagine that times were so bad that people had to be separated from their children?”

“Yes,” Jason responded, “but it sounds like my grandfather thought it was a pretty good thing.”
