WILLOW WAS TOO ANGRY to return to Brooklynâs. She texted her to let her know sheâd pop in on Sunday again and went to her own condo.
Sheâd come to the conclusion on the way home that men are bastardsâthe whole lot of them. The feelings inside her confused her. It was more than anger . . . she was disappointed.
The connection sheâd made with the Phantom that night had been a surprise, especially in light of her feelings for Michael. But, sheâd decided to embrace the things heâd made her feel. It had felt real over the past two weeks of telephone conversations. Heâd made her feel desired and wanted. He was the first man sheâd been comfortable with, to talk about herself.
âA farce, the bastard. Thatâs all it was. Iâm such a pushover. I shouldâve known it was too good to be true,â she scoffed. The anger began rising again and she dug the phone out of her bag when it started ringing. She answered without checking who it was.
âWillow Roth.â
âI donât care about Hadley, his cars or the race, Willow. Itâs you I want and Iâm not going to give up.â
She ended the call, ignoring the rush of excitement through her veins.
âWhat a fucked-up situation. Iâve not had a man in my life for years and now there are two. One, who made it clear he doesnât want me and the other, who does.
A derisive snort echoed through the room, her voice acerbic and wry at the same time.
âSuch a pity. Both of them are lecherous Neanderthals with no interest in anything real, but fucking all the willing pussies they can find.â
Michael, sheâd already decided to put behind her. Heâd made it clear he had no interest in a wife and children and apart from that, she wouldnât be able to trust him. She would constantly wonder between whose thighs he was delving in.
John Sutton, never mind the unexplained attraction she felt for him, was no different.
âYep, Willow. Itâs time to move on. Now that Michael Hadley has fallen off the pedestal youâd placed him on for all these years, youâll be able to find someone who can make life worth living.â
She heard her words echo around her, but her heart somehow didnât seem to be as eager to move on as her mind was. Willow sighed. It was no use denying that she loved Michael; she had for as long as she could remember. What used to be an infatuation had grown into a âonce in a lifetimeâ kind of love; deep, special and something to be nurtured. It wasnât going to be all that easy to forget about him and move on.
