Austin: What happened to your arms? Eabha ⦠what are those bruises?
Eabha: Itâs nothing, Austin. Just leave it, OK? (She snatches her arm away from him, pushing her sleeves down)
Austin: Theyâre like fingerprints. Did he do this? Did Cillian hurt you again?
Eabha: Please, Austin. Iâm asking you to just leave it, OK?
Austin: If he hurt you, I swear to God, Iâll kill him. Iâll fucking kill him.
Austin strides away from her, anger filling each step.
Eabha: Where are you going? Austin? Austin, donât hurt him. Please!
Austin (furious): Youâre not to see him again. Do you hear me? This has to stop.
Eabha: Listen to me â please. Just stop for a second! Iâll deal with this. I donât need you protecting me, Austin!
Austin: It looks to me like you do! Iâm not going to wait around for something worse to happen. He threw stones at you, Eabha â look at the gash over your eye. Now, youâre covered in bruises. Do you think Iâm going to do nothing? (His voice breaks) Iâm all you have ⦠and youâre all I have too!
Eabha: Just ⦠just donât hurt him, Austin. At least we have each other ⦠Cillian has no one.
âWhew!â Dara said as she lowered her script, a smile lighting her face. âYouâre really starting to sound like him now. Youâve perfected Austinâs growl.â
Sam bowed his head. âWhy, thank you. Letâs hope it doesnât rub off permanently,â he said, watching a swan float by, turning her long neck briefly to regard them, hopeful for bread they hadnât brought with them. âYou know, I actually like this scene. Itâs the one time I get my characterâs motivation â I mean, Iâd beat the living shit out of Cillian if he did that to you.â
She was surprised by the conviction in his voice and even more surprised by the hopeful, upward slope it brought to her lip. He still cared.
Her smile grew bolder. âYou want to keep reading?â she asked.
âNot really,â he replied, leaning backwards on the wooden dock. He watched her, as if assessing her, while he scratched at the stubble spread across his neck and chin. âTell me â howâs the new gaff?â
âItâs grand,â Dara said, adjusting the belt of her linen jumpsuit. âOisÃn stayed over last night ⦠I ran into him making a quick exit this morning.â
Sam threw his head back, laughing loudly. âCaught red-handed.â He shook his head. âYou know he was giving out stink that you moved in?â
âWas he?â
âYeah ⦠Am I the only one who doesnât want to live with Eabha?â
âI guess so. You donât fancy her? Not even a little?â
âSheâs not my type.â
âNo? Whatâs your type then?â
âDonât do this, Dara ⦠donât be all coy with me.â
âDonât do what?â She smiled. âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âYeah, you do.â He slid closer to her; she could feel a sudden nervousness in him. âDara, what are we doing?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYou know what I mean ⦠you know exactly what I mean. Itâs been there from the start, but then you moved into the house and it ⦠I donât know, it just really bothered me.
