Austin: What happened to your arms? Eabha … what are those bruises?

Eabha: It’s nothing, Austin. Just leave it, OK? (She snatches her arm away from him, pushing her sleeves down)

Austin: They’re like fingerprints. Did he do this? Did Cillian hurt you again?

Eabha: Please, Austin. I’m asking you to just leave it, OK?

Austin: If he hurt you, I swear to God, I’ll kill him. I’ll fucking kill him.

Austin strides away from her, anger filling each step.

Eabha: Where are you going? Austin? Austin, don’t hurt him. Please!

Austin (furious): You’re not to see him again. Do you hear me? This has to stop.

Eabha: Listen to me – please. Just stop for a second! I’ll deal with this. I don’t need you protecting me, Austin!

Austin: It looks to me like you do! I’m not going to wait around for something worse to happen. He threw stones at you, Eabha – look at the gash over your eye. Now, you’re covered in bruises. Do you think I’m going to do nothing? (His voice breaks) I’m all you have … and you’re all I have too!

Eabha: Just … just don’t hurt him, Austin. At least we have each other … Cillian has no one.

‘Whew!’ Dara said as she lowered her script, a smile lighting her face. ‘You’re really starting to sound like him now. You’ve perfected Austin’s growl.’

Sam bowed his head. ‘Why, thank you. Let’s hope it doesn’t rub off permanently,’ he said, watching a swan float by, turning her long neck briefly to regard them, hopeful for bread they hadn’t brought with them. ‘You know, I actually like this scene. It’s the one time I get my character’s motivation – I mean, I’d beat the living shit out of Cillian if he did that to you.’

She was surprised by the conviction in his voice and even more surprised by the hopeful, upward slope it brought to her lip. He still cared.

Her smile grew bolder. ‘You want to keep reading?’ she asked.

‘Not really,’ he replied, leaning backwards on the wooden dock. He watched her, as if assessing her, while he scratched at the stubble spread across his neck and chin. ‘Tell me – how’s the new gaff?’

‘It’s grand,’ Dara said, adjusting the belt of her linen jumpsuit. ‘Oisín stayed over last night … I ran into him making a quick exit this morning.’

Sam threw his head back, laughing loudly. ‘Caught red-handed.’ He shook his head. ‘You know he was giving out stink that you moved in?’

‘Was he?’

‘Yeah … Am I the only one who doesn’t want to live with Eabha?’

‘I guess so. You don’t fancy her? Not even a little?’

‘She’s not my type.’

‘No? What’s your type then?’

‘Don’t do this, Dara … don’t be all coy with me.’

‘Don’t do what?’ She smiled. ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’

‘Yeah, you do.’ He slid closer to her; she could feel a sudden nervousness in him. ‘Dara, what are we doing?’

‘What do you mean?’

‘You know what I mean … you know exactly what I mean. It’s been there from the start, but then you moved into the house and it … I don’t know, it just really bothered me.
