CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

In Clare, Carrie was in a tizz. There was no other word for it, she’d decided. She had been that way for five hours, ever since she’d received an email from the TV producer. Short and to the point. Rafe Ascot was in Clare now. He’d moved his trip forward for personal reasons. Would Carrie like to interview him for her blog?

By phone? She’d emailed back.

No, in person. Tonight.

Tonight!!??

It’s tonight, or nothing, I’m afraid.

She’d immediately said yes. A publicist had emailed her, telling her when and where to go. He was staying at one of the Valley’s finest guesthouses.

‘I hope the council isn’t paying for it,’ Matthew said.

He’d arrived early to get the feel of the Valley before filming started, the publicist said.

‘To get lots of free wine, more like it,’ Matthew said.

‘Are you jealous?’ Carrie said, as she came out into the living room in her third outfit.

‘Of course not. He sounds like a big poser, that’s all.’ Matthew picked up the glossy gossip magazine on the sofa beside him and flicked through to an inside story. He started to read aloud. ‘“Rafe Ascot seems oblivious to the fuss about his latest relationship as new photos of the loved-up couple enjoying romantic Paris emerged this week. He tweeted: Love knows no borders, no boundaries, no barriers.” How corny can he get?’

‘It’s how celebrities talk these days. Should I get a Twitter account as well as a website, do you think? Or an Instagram account? Or even Snapchat?’

‘I have no idea what you’re talking about and I don’t want to know. I’ll be outside.’

‘Matthew, come back. Does this look okay?’

There was no reply. A minute later she heard the shed door creak open. He’d be in there polishing the car. Still, better he hit the polish when he was in a bad mood than the beer, she thought, inspecting her appearance in their bedroom mirror. Thankfully the kids were having a sleepover with a friend of hers in town. She just wished Matthew would stop being so silly about this interview and help her decide which of her few decent pregnancy dresses looked the best. Not that anything would possibly happen between her and Rafe – not only was she married and pregnant, but he was also in a very public relationship, and anyway, what would a famous English actor find at all attractive about an ordinary South Australian entertainment investigative journalist?

Her phone chimed. A text from Bett in Ireland: Just checked emails, saw the one from the producer.

Carrie frowned. How had Bett seen that? She quickly checked. Bett had been copied in. Damn. She’d been looking forward to breaking the big news to Bett herself. She read on.

Great news about the interview. Let me know if you need any help with your questions.

She certainly didn’t need Bett’s help. Not with the questions, anyway. She took a quick selfie and sent it to Bett’s number. Questions fine. Does this look okay?

A few minutes went past, then another chime.

Are you
