Now it’s six months later. My room looks like a photograph. I’m in the corner, huddled in underwear. My rusty fingers take hours to unclasp, but at last I stretch my knees and rise for miles. After I’m done ascending, I see everything differently. What I thought was the ceiling was a shelf, and on top of it there’s a bottle of pills glowing with promise. Only, I can’t remember whether these pills are uppers or downers. Does it matter? Bolts creaking, I scrabble against the anger-proof lid. It refuses me, so I snatch a torch and melt a hole in the plastic. White tablets clatter across the massive floor. Downers. I pluck a few and pop them between my lips. My heart rumbles like a far-off summer thunderstorm. Stars attack the sky, the sun turns belly-up, and the window’s cinema of the world grades down to darkness. The next swaying begins.
