AGNES MILLER TREATED Eloise with quiet indifference. So much so that whatever interest Eloise had held for Agnes was greatly diminished when she saw how little they had in common. Both girls were eleven years old, but Agnes drew doodles and studied fashion and spent hours on the bedroom floor cutting out McCormick’s dress patterns and laying them all over the room, including Eloise’s bed. She played dead white people’s music on an upright mahogany piano. She sang church hymns for her parents in an off-key voice that burned Eloise’s ears. Agnes was shepherded Monday through Friday from piano lessons to dance class to manners school to gymnastics and Bible study, and it shocked Eloise that Agnes did not roll her eyes or protest at all. Her book bag and her smile were always ready when Lady or Deacon Miller picked her up from school. Oftentimes Eloise would ride along with them and sit in the waiting room, reading or doing homework during Agnes’s lessons. The Millers asked Eloise on more than one occasion if she would also like to take up piano or dance, but Eloise knew they were feeling sorry for her.
