Chapter 12
Lamia blinked in the darkness, scared and sweating. She had found her way quickly back to her bedroom after leaving Nemesis and now she sat in a chair next to the bed, watching the man named Michael as he slept.
She listened as Nyvek and Eldritch left the cathedral and returned ten minutes later with a third person. They ushered the guest upward into the tower as noiselessly as possible, then just as quietly came back downstairs.
In the bed, Michael stirred. His face was pale and dark circles still rimmed his eyes, even after having slept for so long. Lamia chewed her lower lip, remembering what she had done to him, still unsure of exactly what it all meant.
At one point she made the bathroom appear to have been used, just in case anyone should ask how she was clean. No one came to check on them, however, and she wondered at the lack of interaction throughout the day.
As the evening fell into night she became impatient. She wanted to see Nemesis again. She slid from her seat and moved across the room on tip-toe. Her breath caught when the bedroom door creaked and she slipped into the hallway, through the shadows, making her way toward the bell tower. Downstairs she could hear Nyvek and Eldritch arguing about something and she ignored the strange but familiar Old Language.
Quietly up the stairs to the tower she went. When she reached the top she pulled open the door and closed it behind her with an almost inaudible click.
âI thought I told you to get out,â Nemesis said without facing her.
She stared at his silhouette, framed by the high arches of the tower windows, the outline of his face barely discernable in the light of the streetlamps. His shadow loomed over the room, giant and menacing.
Her eyes widened in shock, mouth open in dismay. She finally found her voice enough to ask in a small terrified whisper, âWhat?â
Nemesis turned to face her, rubbing at his temples, and the anger vanished as he caught sight of her. âItâs you!â He held out a hand toward her. âMy sincerest apologies, my dear. I thought you were someone else. I am truly glad you came back so soon.â
His voice was low and his eyes hypnotic as he moved toward her. He ran a stark white hand through her hair, emerald eyes never leaving hers until he kissed her. Their lips lingered next to the otherâs and they parted slowly. Lamia let out a small sigh and stared up at Nemesis in anticipation.
He took her hand and led her toward the bed. Lamia stopped short when she caught sight of the woman already there, smiling at their approach. Lamia glanced up at him curiously and Nemesis smiled, motioning toward their guest.
âLamia meetâ¦.â
âSherry,â finished the woman helpfully when Nemesis showed signs of having forgotten her name.
âThank you.â
âNo problem.â Sherry grinned.
Lamia noticed how young this woman really was up close. She was wearing too much makeup in an only half-successful attempt to look older.
