CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

He spotted her straight away. Standing in the lobby of the quaint hotel in Munich, Germany, opening the zipper of a daypack that was sitting on a sofa. Concentration lining her face, no doubt she was looking for something or trying to find a spot for the water bottle in her hand. He made his way over.

“Kate Morgan? Is that you?” He hoped he sounded convincing given he was meant to be seeing her for the first time since The Melbourne Cup.

She spun around, a startled look on her face.

“Ryan?” Only Kate had that warm tone when she said his name. It was sexy and soothing at the same time and it made his whole body come alive with anticipation.

“What a surprise.” He animatedly raised his eyebrows and flung his arms in the air hoping his acting skills would pass. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here. Although now that I think about it, I do recall you mentioning something about a Christmas tour, didn’t you? Who would’ve thought we’d be doing the same one?” He was probably babbling. He’d always been crap at acting.

“I didn’t think you were coming,” she said, quietly so no one else would hear, but what the hell? It threw him.

“Wait! What? I thought.” He paused. How to approach this? He cleared his throat. “I always come when I say I’m going to. You know that,” he added, a slight teasing note to his voice as he sent her a furtive wink before leaning in and kissing both her cheeks, in a European greeting, just to test the waters.

The look on her face when he pulled away wasn’t a happy one. Was this a disaster waiting to happen?

“Okay, can you stop with the innuendo?” Her neck flushed, making butterflies churned in his gut. “You’re close to breaking the deal I negotiated with you.” She kept her tone cool and calm but he could see her pulse throbbing in her neck. Was it wrong that he wanted to lick and kiss it? Probably.

“You’re not playing fair,” he muttered.

“I never said anything about playing fair. I fully intend to test you.”

He stared, perhaps too long at her, and she shuffled her feet awkwardly before glancing at the two kids, who were now by her side, watching him curiously.

“Ah, these must be your children.”

“Yes, meet Amy and Jacob,” she said, an inscrutable expression on her face. As she angled, shifting to stand on the other side of him, she surreptitiously leaned in and whispered in his ear. “The bedroom’s not the only place you can pull off a quick recovery.”

Wicked woman. “I’m Ryan.” He attempted to ignore the sensation she’d created in his body as he shook each of their hands in turn.

“Awesome, if you had long hair you’d look like Thor from The Avengers.” Amy responded with enthusiasm.

“When did you see The Avengers?” Kate blinked.

“When I had the sleepover at Charlotte’s.” Amy shrugged. The horrified look on Kate’s face indicated she wouldn’t have given approval and he understood her concern.
