W.D. always got upset about us fighting. Sometimes when he’d hear us he’d start to cry. It scared him bad, from the time he was real little. We tried to tell him that sometimes two folks that love each other just fight a lot, the way me and Susan did, but that it don’t mean nothing. We’d hug him, and we’d hug each other and try to show him everything was all right.

When W.D. got older—he started this around four or five—he took to hiding or running off when he heard us having trouble between us. He might hide in the tool shed out back or run across the street to Renfroe’s house and ask could he play with their little boy. The first time that happened, it scared us to death. He heard us fighting close to midnight, yelling back and forth about money. When we quit, Susan went in to check on him, but he wasn’t there. We searched the house, shouting for him, and we had both started to go wild when here come Renfroe’s wife Alma in her nightgown, carrying W.D. across the street. He’d run over there and knocked on the door like it was three in the afternoon and asked could he play with Jerry.

I remember clear as day what I felt right before that, since for all I knew, W.D. was laying out in some field with his throat cut. I thought maybe I’d seen my boy alive for the last time, that he’d been taken from us without the least warning. You start to think like that, the worst sickness in the world starts to bubble up inside you. And even if you ain’t a praying man or woman, let your child disappear in the middle of the night, it’ll put the word Jesus in your throat, I guarantee it.
