I wanted an inventory of her wounds, a tale of childhood misery to equal my own. I wanted stories I’d never heard, incidents that would provide the connective tissue. I wanted her to remember, and I wanted her to atone. She made a sound like an animal being gutted. “I’m sorry,” she wailed, sinking to the floor. “What more can I tell you? I’m sorry.”
