Such courage shown by Zaghloul—albeit more like bravado—was seen as impudence by the British high commissioner, who, with that arrogance that was so typical of the British at that time, promptly had Zaghloul and his companions arrested and deported to the Seychelles. This flagrant act of authority by the British sparked mass demonstrations across Egypt. These quickly turned into widespread violence against British and foreign residents. To quell this revolt the British were compelled to free Zaghloul and his companions and allow them to travel to France. But this was not enough, and the violence continued, with the British losing nearly all authority in Egypt. Drastic action was now needed. Lord Allenby, the victor over the Ottomans in Palestine, was immediately dispatched to Egypt to restore order. Although the revolt was brutally crushed, it was now evident that Britain would soon have to give Egypt its independence and maintain only a military presence in the Suez Canal Zone.
