One week passed, made busy with smaller items on the schedule. Mays helped repair a wind tower that had blown down above the fire station. They also aided in the plans for the fish-farm in Gandy â knowing all the while that these things would never occur.
Mays and Martin arrived in the marina at 10 p.m. Shirley was sitting on the porch, smoking a pipe. She waved them up, and they visited her for a while.
âHowâs it going?â she asked while she poured cold tea into plastic cups.
âItâs going well. We learned a lot from our first try, and I think weâll learn more the next time out,â Mays said, taking a sip of the cold drink. âThanks for this. But we had better get to work, will we see you at the meeting?â
âOh, yes, I never miss them now. Iâm heading to bed â Iâll see you,â she said, waving them goodbye.
They went into the boathouse and Martin pointed out the work they had done on the port side. Theyâd repeat it on the starboard, next.
It didnât take long for them to be sure they werenât being watched by Krule. Even though time was sensitive, they had made enough progress to call it quits early and get some rest. This time, Mays drove home, but he cut the dieselâs ignition and rolled down the slope to his driveway using the truckâs momentum. No sense in alerting Krule that they had come home early. He set the brake and they walked the rest of the way up to the house. Lily had left the lights on in the study to make it look like someone was home while they had been in the grotto. When they got down to the platform, they were pleasantly surprised to see that Chris was finishing welding the first wing structure onto the starboard side. A cloud layer of pungent smoke suspended above them. Mays and Martin assisted as Chris tacked the final weld.
âLooks good, I like the extra struts you added,â Mays said pointing.
âYeah, well I got to thinking; each side fully loaded with seawater will weigh about 700 pounds. Two braces wouldnât hold it, so I added a third,â he said. âHow come you guys are back so soon?â
âKrule didnât show,â Mays said, âWe hung out there for a bit, in case he was late, then wanted to come back this way. This is where the important work is.â
They worked on the port-side wing together and got it framed and mounted in under an hour.
Around midnight, they decided to call it quits. They would get the tanks down the following day and get to work installing the pumps and valves needed to fill and blow the tanks, mount them under the wings, and do the electrical harness through the hull. Only after the solar cells were mounted could the high-voltage harness be sealed and made waterproof.
Mays thought over the next daysâ work, what it would take to install the battery banks, and realized that in less than ten days, theyâd be over halfway done with the Jessica.
