Eve floated through the rest of the afternoon with Levi. Finally, she’d belong to someone. Someone who loved and cared about her. She could escape Mabel and Rosy. But to wait a year. Her heart tumbled whenever she thought about having to wait to get away from her mother. And Mabel, what would she say?
Mother had high plans for Eve to marry a prominent figure. She laughed. So far as she knew, the only man who fit that description was Judge Taggart and he was happily married. Levi had possibilities.
She walked to her window and looked out at the quiet street. A few people dotted the dusty road in the town. Several horses were tied in front of the saloon. Levi had brought her back and said he had to work on some things.
What things she wondered. And then as she watched, Bridgette walked past her room in the boarding house and down the street. Eve couldn’t take her eyes off the woman. And then she groaned as Bridgette walked into the sheriff’s office. She’d not even knocked but opened the door as if it were common practice for her.
Eve wanted to give that woman a piece of her mind. She prayed that Levi would send her packing. That was one woman that threatened every man in the town. And Bridgette new it. She had a power over them.
Fed up with just watching, Eve grabbed her reticule and bonnet and was about to tell her a thing or two when the door opened.
Mabel didn’t wait for an invitation but strode inside and faced Eve. “I heard some news today. Is it true you’re going to marry the sheriff?”
“Yes, it is.” She didn’t explain it would be in a year. As far as Eve was concerned, Mabel had no business in her affairs.
“I forbid it. He’s not right for you. There will be decent men coming here. Lawyers, we already have a doctor. Prominent businessmen and ranchers. Wait for one of them to ask you. You’re a beautiful young woman that any man would be proud to marry.”
“I love Levi.”
Her mother snorted. “Love. For women, it means more to have security than love. You can’t eat love. Love won’t buy you a house or clothes. Love won’t keep you alive when things are bad.”
“That’s a rather jaded view isn’t it, Mother?”
“It’s born out of experience. Trust me, wait for the right man to come along. The town grows daily. Since the train station opened, I see new customers every day.”
“Ha, I surely wouldn’t want them after—”
Mabel slapped her. “I sell drinks and that is all.”
Rubbing her cheek, Eve glared at her. “Sure. I believe you. I’m not waiting. Levi loves me, and has promised to marry me.”
Her mother’s eyes brightened. “So it’s not immediate? Good, keep you options open. Did you hear about the judge and Rachel and their trip to Europe? That’s what I want for you. Only the best.”
“Sure Mo-Mabel. Just the same, I’m marrying the sheriff.”
“He could be killed any day.
