Chapter 21

Lee had the van going as fast as it could. It was a good thing he’d replaced the solar cells; otherwise, he might have run out by now. And he didn’t like the idea of replacing them in the middle of this storm, especially with that thing above them.

Luna had seen it. They both had. It wasn’t just the storm. Something was up there. Something big. Something bigger than big, something massive. If he had to guess, it was bigger than the City even. That green lightning that kept flashing within the roiling black waves of the Everstorm was new too. All his years driving and walking and chasing stuff around the Waste, he’d never seen anything like it until yesterday.

He hated to admit it, but it scared him. That massive bulge in the Everstorm was new too. It seemed to be positioned right above Denali City. He was still a long ways off, but maybe they’d make it in time.

He hated that Luna was scared—not necessarily because she was scared, but because people did stupid things when they were scared. The last thing he needed was Luna making his life even more complicated than she already had.

That’s not fair, he suddenly thought, not certain it was even his own thought.

It wasn’t her fault that this world had been pitted against her from the start.

A bolt of lightning etched itself across the Red Wastes, illuminating the landscape with a toxic green glow. The whipcrack sound that followed vibrated through his entire body, and he felt his teeth ache with the force of it. Luna reached over quickly and grabbed his forearm with a whimper.

Something was happening, and it wasn’t something good.

“It’s okay, girl. It’s okay,” he said, patting her tiny hand. Then he looked at her and tried to smile.

“We’ll be okay,” he said with his free hand.

She nodded back but didn’t look convinced. He knew she’d experienced enough trouble in her six years to last a lifetime and wished she didn’t have to deal with this new development, but here they were, charging toward the City while something postured menacingly above it.

The wind made small dust devils that danced through the van’s beams briefly before they were whisked away into the darkness around them. The occasional green light that flashed around them cast eerie shadows. The whole environment made his skin crawl. The reverberating thunder made his stomach turn, and he knew Luna could feel it by the way her fingers squeezed his arm each time it rumbled.

Lee stared at the sky. It was wrong. Luna had told him earlier that it looked angry, and it had. Now, it looked downright aggressive. The bulge that had previously been a minor inconsistency in the undulating waves of the Everstorm was now a massive lowering of the previously resolute cloud pattern. Without the accompanying lightning and occasional glimpse of something beyond, he would believe it to be a massive Black Eye. The fact that it hadn’t made groundfall yet was enough to know it couldn’t be.
