Bessie stepped in front of Robin so she could look him in the eye. âWhoa. You mean, that man who crawled out of the glacier was you?â
âNot exactly. As I said, the Hunterâs and Bearâs evolution keeps pace with that of their templatesâhuman and bear.â
âWhy?â
âTo answer that, Iâd have to give you a long lecture on prehistoric life forms and planetary genesis. We donât have time.â
Truman crossed his arms. âIâve got plenty of time.â
Robin turned away from the altar and began to vanish. âTime also is an illusion.â
Fog billowed up around them again, and the cave disappeared.
The change of tone left Bessie uneasy. Plus the fog wasnât clearing. âTruman? What do you think heâsââ
Then it suddenly dissipated. They now stood in a snow-covered clearing in a mountainous pine forest. Snow fell so thick that she had a hard time seeing, but she could still make out Truman a few feet away. His legs disappeared into the knee-deep accumulation, but of course nothing landed on him. She looked down at herself and saw she was the same way. They were like ghosts.
She jumped when she saw Robin standing behind her.
âHereâs what you need to know about time,â he said. âEvery seven hundred years the Earthâs energies split and become incarnate. The Bear will live for another seven centuries if not hunted down first. If the Hunter doesnât kill her within that time, then the Bear will die anywayâbut the world will die as well.â
âWh-what? What do you mean?â Bessie found it impossible to concentrate in this blizzard. It didnât matter that the blowing snow didnât actually touch her. Her instincts said she was in danger from the elements and she had better find shelter now.
Truman waded through the snowdrifts with no more trouble than he would through fogâbecause indeed thatâs all it was. He came to stand beside Bessie. âItâs just more mumbo-jumbo, darlinâ. He wants us to think the world will end without him.â
âNot right away,â Robin said. âThere just wonât be any more Hunters and Bears. But the environmental imbalances you see now will only accelerate.â
Bessie tried unsuccessfully to swat falling snowflakes out of her face. She felt like swatting Truman. âGo on, Robin. Like what?â
âGlobal warming, beehive Colony Collapse Disorder and the destruction of the food chain, rising rates of cancer and premature birthsâitâs all just the beginning. Soon, magma disturbances will weaken the magnetic and gravitational fields. The invisible Van Allen Belts will disappear along with our protection from solar particles. The planet will wobble like a faulty gyroscope, disrupting the seasons. Shall I go on?â
Bessie needed to see something tangible and reassuring. She looked at her hands for lack of anything better. âOh my god.â
âThis is a big crock, if you ask me,â Truman said.
Bessie glared at him. âWhatâs wrong with you? I havenât seen as much as you have, and yet I believe him.â
âMaybe thatâs the difference between you and me.â
âWhy would someone as powerful as Robin bother to explain this if it wasnât the truth?â
âBeats me.
