FIFTY-FIVE

SICILY, THE PRESENT

Michael could have called Luciano Scaglione from the Vatican jet, but decided that the news of his sons’ murders should be delivered in person; he owed the Don that much.

Michael ordered the pilots to bypass Rome this time in favor of landing at Filippo Eredia Airport in Fontanarossa, Catania, where the diplomatic visas and fake identifications he and Alexander still possessed made for swift passage past the on-duty carabinieri guards.

Dawn had just broken in the silent countryside when the car Alexander had arranged to be waiting for them at the airstrip reached the outskirts of the Scaglione estate fifty miles away in Caltagirone. Alexander slowed when they approached the security gate that fronted the property, the dense fields and foliage looking especially rich in the rising sun.

“Wait, there’s no guard,” Michael noted tensely. “There’s always been a guard, for as long as I can remember.”

Alexander brought their car to a halt and climbed out, not bothering to tell Michael to remain inside. Michael saw the Sig Sauer nine-millimeter pistol flash in his hand, held low by the hip so as to be invisible to anyone watching.

They checked the guardhouse and surrounding area to no avail. Michael lifted the intercom phone hung from the guardhouse wall and hit the button next to the switch hook.

“Nothing,” he said, returning it.

Alexander remained silent as he wiped Michael’s fingerprints from the phone with his handkerchief. “We should continue on,” he said finally.

“What did you see?”

“Nothing, and that’s what bothers me.”

Alexander unhitched the gate and eased it all the way open. Michael climbed back into the car with him.

“Don’t bother telling me to wait behind,” he told Alexander.

“You’ll be safer with me, Stolarchos.”
