Although I enjoyed my student life, it didn’t stop me worrying about Carolyn. The older she got, the more needy she became. Me and Mum put our heads together to try and work out ways to help. Whenever we came up with an idea, Carolyn dismissed it. She said she had friends and didn’t need us. As evidence, she invited Patricia round. My mother squirmed as Patricia went on about her life on the estate. How her dad did the pools and her mum wore curlers. I know it sounds ridiculous, but back then my mother regarded herself as middle class and couldn’t abide the idea of Carolyn mixing. She so wanted the talk to stop that she started humming to prevent further revelations from Patricia. I remember when she told me about it I went rigid, trying to hold myself together and not laugh out loud. I felt for them both: Mum longing for Carolyn to have nice friends… and Carolyn, grasping at the only friendship on offer.
