“Oh my God. This is a fucking disaster,” Phin, my assistant, murmured underneath his breath as he stared down at his phone in his hands. He then looked over at me from across my desk, his face quickly going pale. “Fuck. Have you… seen the news about Cade McCormick?”

“I’ve seen it,” I replied before I let out a deep sigh. “What do you think, Phin? Do you think this story has any legs?”

“Uh, I think this is the exact kind of story that chops other stories down by the leg,” Phin continued. “I think this is the kind of thing that can make us look like the worst kind of people if we’re caught associating with sexual predators—”

“Cade isn’t a sexual predator.”

“No, but it looks like he’s enabling them.” Phin grimaced. “Unfortunately, sir, perception is reality for these app guys. CEOs have been asked to step down for less. Maybe we should ask him if he wants to do that? And then, we could still go through with the deal—”

“So, you like the deal?”

“I like the app.” Phin beamed. “I used it about eight months ago. It was how I met my boyfriend, soon-to-be fiancé.”

“Congratulations, Phin.” I beamed back. “Remind me to send you an engagement gift, when the question finally gets popped.”

“I will, sir.” Phin nodded before he went on. “So, what are we going to do about Cade McCormick? Do you want me to pump the brakes? Or do you want me to set up a meeting with him? So I can tell him in person that we’re still thinking about the deal but we’ll need some time to consider everything with the current press surrounding the company—”

“I think it might be too late to set a meeting.”

“Why?” Phin grimaced again.

“Because he’s already here.” I tilted my head toward my office door as Cade confidently walked down the hall.

“Want me to stall him?” Phin asked, turning to look at Cade. “Do you want me to call security?”

“He can come in,” I answered. “But when he finally bursts through that door, make it seem like we were having a really intense conversation.”

“But we were having a really intense conversation—”

“Sorry for interrupting,” Cade started, pushing open the door, now standing in the middle of my office. “Ben, do you think we could speak for a moment? In private?”

“Of course,” I replied before I looked over at Phin. “We’ll pick up where we left off a little later, Phin. And thanks for having your eye on the ball. We can’t keep paying for other people’s mistakes. It’s like punching holes in our own lifeboat.”

“I’ll keep my eye on the ball, sir,” Phin said before he turned away from my desk and walked out of the room, swiftly closing the door behind him.

“Care to tell me just what the hell is going on?” I offered the question to Cade. “How the hell did you even let a story like this get away from you, Cade? You always seem so on top of everything with Matched.
