IN THE CAMP OF THE HAWK

~NINETEEN~

I WOKE TO the sensation of swaying and the feel of a saddle beneath me. I was on a horse.

My head ached like the entire river Jessu had been poured inside my skull and left to swirl and rage. My eyes burned in their sockets behind my closed lids, and my mouth tasted like old blood. My cheek rested against something hard and warm.

I forced my eyes open. The blurry, indistinct shapes before me sharpened into focus, and I made a strangled sound. Trees. Rocks, covered in lichen. I looked down, and saw wet ferns swishing past. I turned my head, discovering the source of the warmth and hardness I’d rested against—a broad, black-clad back. I discovered my limbs again as my senses recovered themselves. My arms encircled the waist of the man astride the horse in front of me, tied in place so I couldn’t jump or fall off the animal. My legs dangled on either side of the horse’s flanks.

“She’s awake,” someone said.

The man before me shifted, and then said something in the language of the silvras. He cast a glance over his shoulder at me, and I saw his green eyes and a sliver of his tanned skin around his eyes and across the bridge of his nose, but nothing more because of the scarf that hid his face.

I tried to move, but my arms were tied too tightly. The aching of my head threatened to overwhelm me. I closed my eyes and tried to shut out the world.
