Against the urging of Emma, Callie, and Charlotte, I didn’t talk to Alvarez. I made it my mission to avoid him and the feelings he evoked in me to the best of my ability.

I came to work early and made sure I was long gone by the time he was done with his games. That wasn’t hard, I didn’t always have to stay for the games.

But the times I was unsuccessful, I could read the anger and frustration on his face. I wasn’t handling this well and I knew that.

All I had to do was remember what happened when I was in high school and college to stiffen my resolve, though.

I didn’t need him in my life, even if I hated not talking to him.

I should have known my luck was running out, though, when I answered my phone on Saturday after the regular season ended and the Spartans hadn’t made it through the first round of playoffs.

“Hey,” I answered.

“What’s this I hear about you not coming today?” Callie asked without greeting me.

I blinked, surprised at the hardness in her voice.

“Uh…” I started, not sure what to say to her.

I sighed and dropped my hand. I didn’t need anything to tell me what Callie meant.

She was referring to the team cookout happening today. The entire organization was invited—including the office workers—and it was supposed to be the big blow out at the end of the season.

Listening to Sue talk about it, it was this awesome, family friendly experience that lasted most of the day.

Everyone came together to celebrate a season being over before we moved into off-season operations, which was mainly some of the guys coming in for workouts and meetings and me working like normal to prep for the next season with others.

I didn’t want to go, though. I knew Alvarez would be there and it would be hard to avoid him, not only because he would probably try to corner me, but I knew my friends would throw me to the wolves to get me to talk to him.

Every time we met up, I got asked if we’d talked yet. Then I’d get the look that told me I was stupid. Then they’d look at each other with an all-knowing look.

“Crap.”

I sighed and drained the last of my coffee before standing and walking into my kitchen to rinse my mug out.

Then I dashed to my room to quickly hop in the shower and shave before pulling on my swimsuit, a coverup, and packing a bag.

Then I went to
