Chapter Six
Tiana had only the haziest memories of the night before. She remembered getting packed onto a tiny charter plane at the airport. She remembered peeking out of the window to see the dark sea in the dead of night. She remembered being carried into the bedroom that she was now sleeping in, and covers drawn over shoulders.
Now bright golden sunlight was streaming in the tall windows, and she looked around with wonder.
She got out of bed, realizing with a wrinkle of her nose that she had slept in her dress and makeup. Tiana stripped to the skin, heading to the bathroom. After a long shower, she felt far better. On impulse, she left her long hair loose. It flowed down her back, longer than she’d had it for a while, but something about the length appealed to her. Perhaps she would let it grow a little longer before she cut it.
The day was bright and beautiful, and she couldn't stand to go out in anything stiff or formal. Instead, she pulled out a becoming blue sundress, one that was short enough to show off her long legs, and with a curved sweetheart neckline that showed off her curves. She looked at herself in the mirror, and then she grabbed her camera, smiling at her reflection. Now she looked like herself.
She wandered out into the house and, quickly, she realized why Alexandros called it a palace. It was a beautiful home, but with its sprawling size and tall ceilings, it could be nothing but a palace. I wonder if he is lonely here.
She made her way to a bright solar, where she found Alexandros waiting with a plate full of appetizing small dishes. When he saw her, he grinned, and she was struck all over again by how truly handsome he was.
“I am glad you slept as long as you did,” he said by way of welcome. “You look well-rested.”
“I feel well-rested,” she said, taking her seat by his side. “Despite sleeping in my clothing, I feel pretty amazing.”
Alexandros nodded. “I thought about taking your clothes off, but I thought perhaps that would be too intimate.”
“I wouldn't have minded,” she said, glancing down. She felt more than saw the change come over him, the difference between an Alexandros who was playfully flirting and one who had sighted something he wanted very much.
“But it's just as well you didn't,” she went on hurriedly. “I did sleep just fine, and now today, I am ready to take on your project.”
“After you eat,” Alexandros prompted her, and obediently, she filled her plate with the food that he had laid out.
“Is it just you here?” she asked between mouthfuls of fruit and bread. “There's just... so much.”
“There is a village a mile or so down the lane,” he said. “There is an older married
