Chapter 10
Kathy checked herself out in the full-length mirror while trying out her graduation cap and gown. This was a day she should have been excited about but her thoughts were on Tim. He had received several baseball scholarship offers from some good schools, including some out of state ones. She was worried that she might lose him if he moved so far away.
“You look wonderful,” Betsy said as she walked into Kathy’s room. “Your mother and father would’ve been so proud of you.”
Betsy was sober again and this time she seemed determined to stick to it. She had even started taking art classes with Carla to keep her busy.
“Thanks,’” Kathy said unconvincingly.
“What’s wrong honey?” Betsy asked. “You should be happy.”
“I am. It’s just...never mind.”
“You’re worried about Tim, aren’t you?”
“Yeah, I know I shouldn’t be. He hasn’t even made a decision yet. And even if he does go, I should be happy for him and the opportunities he has. Am I being selfish?”
“No honey, it’s natural to not want to be far from the man you love,” Betsy said, trying to comfort her. “You have all summer to spend with him. Just try to think about that for now.”
Betsy wrapped her arms around Kathy and held her tight for a few minutes.
“I know we never talked about the incident that happened with Walter,” Betsy said.
“We don’t have to,” Kathy quickly interjected.
“No, I’ve been avoiding it for long enough,” Betsy insisted. “I failed you, Kathy, just like I failed your mother. I stayed with your grandfather knowing what a toxic environment he created and I also brought that monster into the house, not thinking how it would affect you.”
“Grandma, it’s not your fault,” Kathy said, hoping she would drop the subject.
“Yes, it is. I was responsible for taking care of you and all I cared about was my own happiness. Please forgive me,” Betsy said as tears filled her eyes.
“Of course I do,” Kathy said as she embraced her grandma. “Please don’t blame yourself. There was no way you could’ve known. Besides, I turned out just fine, didn’t I?”
“Yes, you turned out more than fine.”
Kathy put on a smile and tried her best to look happy at her graduation. She didn’t want to upset Tim as he was to receive an award for leading the baseball team to a state championship during his senior year. This past year had been like heaven to Kathy and Tim.
Their relationship had reached a different level after they began having sex, bringing them closer than ever before. Now Kathy was afraid she was going to lose everything again.
Tim was also having a difficult time figuring out what to do. Being captain of the baseball team this last year of school had given him a sense of responsibility and a taste of leadership that he really enjoyed. He knew what the odds of going pro were and didn’t want to put all his eggs in a basket that was too small to contain them.
