CHAPTER 17

As they walked toward her apartment and continued their conversation from the bar, Erin recognized that their night together was coming to an end. That thought made her a little sad. Becca then reached for one of Erin’s hands, which she had had in her front pocket, pulled it out, and entwined their fingers.

“Is this okay?” Becca asked her.

Erin looked down at their joined hands. She had a flash of the last time she’d walked down the street holding hands with a woman on a date. There was a moment of pain before it disappeared, and a moment of joy caused her to smile when she looked at Becca Pratt.

“Yes,” she said.

“We’re here, actually, so I guess it doesn’t matter.” Becca pointed with her free hand to the building ahead, which was Erin’s apartment building.

“Oh, it matters,” Erin replied. “Trust me.”

“I do,” Becca stated. “Well, this is where I leave you.”

Erin noticed that, for the first time, Becca was nervous. She tugged on the woman’s arm a bit until they were at the door of the building. They went through the front door still hand in hand. Then, she turned around to face Becca.

“I had a good time.”

“Me too,” Becca replied as she slid her thumb over Erin’s hand. “Can we do this again?”

“Tomorrow?”

“A real date, Erin. I’m asking for a real date. Tomorrow is great, but I want to be clear what I’m asking.”

“And I want to be clear that I was saying I wanted to go on a real date with you tomorrow, Becca.”

“Tomorrow, then. Where can I pick you up?”

“Why can’t I pick you up?” Erin tossed back as she took Becca’s other hand in her own.

“At my office? That’s romantic.”

“I meant at your place, Bex.”

“It’s too far away,” Becca said.

“I don’t mind. There’s a train, remember? I can finish up at the café and head home to get ready. I can be at your place by seven. Would that work? Is there a good restaurant near where you live?”

“Seven is fine. Yes, there are restaurants nearby, but we could also just stay in and watch a movie. I hear you like to do that.” Becca smiled at Erin and took a step closer to her.

“I do like movies.” Erin toyed with Becca’s fingers. “What would we eat?”

“You could bring something,” she suggested. “And we could eat while we watch.”

“What would we watch?” Erin asked with a smirk she thought conveyed her intent. She hadn’t done this part in so long. She took the final step in, leaving only a few inches between them. “I like old movies.”

“I’ll watch anything you want if you let me kiss you right now,” Becca breathed out as her intense brown eyes bore into Erin’s.

“Casablanca?”

“Over and over if you want,” the woman replied, tilting her head just slightly.

“What about Breakfast at Tiffany’s?”

“One of my favorites,” Becca whispered as she leaned in.

“Gone with the Wind?”

“Is like four hours long. Yes, let’s watch that.” Becca’s lips were millimeters away. Erin laughed softly against them.
