Chapter

Twenty-Seven

A noise in the distance off to her left caused Myra to snap her head around. She listened intently as whatever or whoever was creating the noise drew steadily closer. After realizing someone was walking toward her, Myra anxiously readied herself for a fight with Tarek.

Before long, she saw movement through the pines and took a deep, calming breath. Myra prepared to lunge but was surprised when it wasn’t Tarek who stepped into view. The man standing before her wore a Thairn soldier’s uniform.

“Come with me if you want to live,” the soldier said quietly.

Myra stood motionless as the realization of who was standing in front of her slowly registered. Her mouth dropped open, and her brow furrowed in confusion.

“How?” she asked. “We searched for you and thought you were dead. How did you survive this long in Tarek’s forest? I don’t understand.”

The soldier held a finger over his lips and stepped close. He leaned forward and whispered in her ear, “I can explain when we get somewhere safe. But please, you must come with me now. We don’t have much time.”

The soldier stepped away, and Myra studied him briefly. Then, she mouthed, “Fine,” and gestured for him to lead the way.

The soldier nodded, turned, and walked away as Myra cautiously followed a few steps behind. Less than a minute later, she exited the snow-covered forest and reentered the Deadlands. After a few more minutes, she walked through what felt like a portal.

The scenery instantly changed again. Myra recognized that she was in the original forest, but it took a few more paces before the reality of the situation struck her. She stepped out from behind a thick grouping of trees, looked to her left, and froze. Straight ahead stood Tarek’s house.
