Chapter 19

Chaz stood and instantly regretted it as her aching head made its presence felt. She headed for the medical kit and grabbed the Tylenol. Charles had been asleep for hours now and she’d spent that time looking into the background of dead Deputy Director Lance Daniels.

He’d been politically active since he was old enough to vote and even then was an outspoken voice against the crime and corruption he claimed permeated the corridors of power. The university press loved him which was made very apparent by the sheer numbers of times he graced their cover.

Harvard University had favored his participation in many on-campus committees. He’d graduated with honors and set up his own small legal practice in New York. Ten years later he was appointed the Deputy Director of the FBI. “That’s some fast and high earning curve. So where did you live back before your appointment?”

The man had a refurbished apartment on the Lower East Side which he occupied with his wife Elizabeth, a highly active and much-revered member of the Republican party, at sixty she was fifteen years his senior.

The high increase in salary didn’t alter his choice of location. In fact, the bank had foreclosed on his mortgage and he and his wife had moved into a rental just four years after his graduation. Six years later, his appointment as the second-highest person in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation had more than tripled his income, yet the Daniels’s remained living in the rundown rental apartment.

For a guy that so clearly enjoyed the spotlight, Chaz found that decision difficult to comprehend. “Did you indulge in any expensive little hobbies, Mr. I’m so clean?”

Chaz looked up as Charles emerged from the bedroom, “Do you ever sleep?” He asked.

“I get enough.”

“Well, if you’re gonna stay awake anyway, you want a coffee?”

“Thanks. That’d be good.”

Charles busied himself in the kitchen as Chaz stood and began pacing around the room.

“’Sup?”

“Hmm? Oh. No, it’s nothing. I just have real problems with folks who don’t appear on the surface to have any faults or weaknesses whatsoever. Except maybe a penchant for attracting the spotlight.”

“Like the Deputy Director of the FBI for instance?”

“Uh-huh. That’s the one. Did anyone ever mention his name in your hearing, within the family I mean?”

“Of course they did. His name came up every time Carlo spotted him on television or in the press. Hey, the guy was actively looking to take down the Puglisi family, so Carlo actively hated him. But, and here it is, the man was tipped to make a run for the Presidency and it would be a stupid man who ever tried to remove him from office if that eventuated. The corruption stink would never fade. Carlo Puglisi was many many things, but stupid wasn’t one of them.”

“So, to the best of your knowledge did Carlo always feel that way, or didn’t he come to the family’s attention before his appointment?”

“Why would that matter? Dead is dead. The reason why he died doesn’t change that.
