A quick thriller – a real thriller, this time! I suddenly thought I might do something with the Ghost Squad of Scotland Yard, and have an incredibly sinister hero, looking like a thug and a crook all the way through… He shall be called Larry, which is a name eminently suited to a man who might be a crook, and I’ll give him a nice nickname, and a scarred face; litter corpses about the place; make everyone talk at least three chapters ahead in a mystifying way; and do what lies in my power to suppress my own cramping sense of the Probable! And clutter up the plot with the sort of Nice Girl who gets into all the jams nice girls don’t get into, and of course falls in love with Gangster-hero. Need I say that so far from disclosing his pure white soul, he ties her up and gags her at a crucial moment – I can’t at the moment imagine why, but don’t you worry! – I shall think up a good reason!

This will not be a Noble Work, but it might be a good serial, and it might find an American publisher. If I do it, I shall do it at once, hoping to polish it off by March – after which I shall retire into the Middle Ages, and be no trouble to anyone for months.
