Amanda tapped her pen against the ruled notepad sitting before her on the library desktop. She’d spent the last few minutes scribbling down a list of areas she and Marco needed to work on, as well as a list of things to follow up on the Cancer Council event.

After the race, she’d encouraged the prince to mingle with his guests. At the event’s conclusion, she’d taken her leave, telling Marco to enjoy a well-deserved night off and spend it with his friends. They’d agreed to meet in the library this morning after breakfast.

She had the impression he was about to invite her to join him and his friends, but she’d managed to avoid giving him the opportunity. She’d desperately needed to tear herself from his presence to settle her thoughts, not to mention her hormones. After a long, cool shower and a night spent considering her duties, she’d awakened ready to work.

Marco entered the library with a cup of coffee in each hand and a lazy smile on his face. Though she suspected he’d been out until the wee hours of the morning, he didn’t look it. His hair was ruffled, as always, but he’d shaved, his gray slacks skimmed his hips without a wrinkle in sight, and he wore a pressed black shirt left slightly open at the collar. The overall effect was relaxed, but pulled together. “Ready to caffeinate?”

“I’ve already caffeinated, but I could use more.” Grateful, she gestured to the coasters at the desktop’s edge. When he set down the cups, she saw his was black, but hers contained the exact amount of milk she always added.

“I saw Samuel Barden in the breakfast room,” he explained, referring to the chef in charge of serving the family. “He said this is how you take it.”

She was touched Marco had thought to ask. “Thank you.”

He leaned his perfect body across the desk and wrinkled his forehead as he pretended to study her list. “That bad, huh? I thought I did extraordinarily well.”

“You did. In fact, I was thrilled with the way it turned out.” Amanda dropped the pen onto the desktop and stood, stretching her legs. “But there’s always room for improvement. Your father expects you to attend more functions than the occasional charity event. An offhand joke or two about rubber boats will only carry you so far. You’ll need to sharpen both your conversational and presentation skills so you’ll be prepared.”

“For what? Has he told you what he has planned?”

“No, but I can guess. There will be meetings with local officials, various government ceremonies, state dinners—”

A look of alarm crossed his face. “A state dinner? Not soon, I hope.”

“No, not soon. But you’ll be expected to attend as many social occasions as possible. Your assistant tells me there are at least thirty invitations on her desk now that it’s known you’re back home to stay. And I read in yesterday’s paper that the National Public Library is nearly finished with their renovations. They’ve sent a request for a member of the royal family to speak at the reopening.
