I CROSSED THE frontier into the PRC from Hong Kong Friday morning. I was met by a young Foreign Ministry worker (reading an English-language international edition of the Reader’s Digest) who accompanied me on the train ride to the southern metropolis of Canton. It showed no signs of tumult, with the biggest excitement there being a chrysanthemum show. I left Canton for Peking by air that evening and was greeted in the capital by another Foreign Ministry official, this one older and less westernized, who assured me nothing at all was happening in Peking.

I was driven to the Min Zu Hotel, a dreary old place where I was told foreign journalists always were assigned. My guide walked me up to a threadbare hotel room and there informed me I would be on my own to explore the city for the weekend but advised me to be ready for “a very important interview” on Monday. Saving the best until last, he informed me there was “a possibility” I would be seeing Teng Hsiao-ping. I had not requested to see Teng, not even knowing his name when I left Washington. Like all the Chinese Communist leaders, he did not see Western journalists. So the regime had in mind some use for me, which I could not yet identify.
