Chapter Eighteen

February 1

THE GOOD THING about being friends with a teacher is she can get out of work early enough to meet for Happy Hour pretty much every day of the week. The bad thing about being friends with a teacher is she wants to go to Happy Hour pretty much every day of the week and we may have turned each other into borderline alcoholics. Kidding. We cool.

Meg leaves work early to meet us for a catch-up on Javier and Ken, and to help me unravel my brain.

“I cannot believe Javier proposed to you!” Meg exclaims after we’ve ordered a round of martinis and appetizers.

“He what?” cries Kim with all the incredulity one can muster on such short notice.

“He didn’t technically propose,” I say, backpedaling. “I mean, he pulled out a ring and said he felt like he could see himself marrying me—”

“Sounds like a proposal to me!” Meg interjects.

“No, no,” I insist. “It was more of a ‘how would you feel if I did propose?’ kind of thing. I think he just wanted to gauge my reaction. I’m not sure if what I said encouraged or discouraged him though.”

“Are you in love with him?” asks Kim.

“I think I could be,” I admit sheepishly. “But, honestly, I’m not sure. I mean, under normal circumstances, I’d definitely keep seeing him and hope for the best, but with Carter and Ken in the mix, I’d kinda just like to put a pin in everything and pick back up down the road if he still wants to see me next January. And yes, I heard myself saying it and realize it’s a lot to ask and probably incredibly naïve.”

“Not to mention the ten other guys you’re going to throw into the mix,” Kim says with a hint of irritation in her tone.

“Yeah, I know,” I reply, a bit defensively. Something’s bugging her, but I can’t quite tell what.

“And how was Ken?” Meg asks. “Everything you hoped he would be in bed?”

“You slept with Ken already?” Okay. Kim is definitely pissed about something.

“No! No, I didn’t,” I say. “We fooled around a bit, but we didn’t go all the way. What is bugging you?”

“Nothing, nothing,” she says lamely. “I just thought Ken’s first day was today, I guess. And Javier really seems to like you. It felt like cheating. I mean, you already cheated on Javier with Carter. This just seemed even worse with the whole faux proposal thing.”

She’s looking at me now like I’m the biggest piece of shit she’s ever seen, and I’m feeling like she’s right. I’m about to ’fess up to this and apologize, when she hits me with, “Sometimes, Cyn, you remind me of Heidi.”

Oh. No. She. Didn’t. Kim has invoked the name of our collective archenemy. The devil incarnate. The bitch we all hated in high school who, well, let’s just say we all made a pact to never name a daughter Heidi or anything close to it. No need to set a kid up to be Satan’s spawn.
