Chapter 12
The moment I found him replayed over and over in my head the next few days.
“Father?” I had said, touching his hand to find it like ice under my fingers. “Father?” I had heard my own voice increase in intensity, but it sounded like it was coming from far away. I was far too stunned to cry.
I had flopped onto my knees and held his cold hand.
So it was all over. That special but complex bond we had shared. I wished he was still there with me, even if just to shout at me one last time.
Though I knew that the estate had been passed onto me, and that I could free all the people of the Plantation as I pleased, the joy I felt was stifled by this choking sensation. Father was dead. My father was really dead. There, in 1842, I had no protector. He had been the one who took care of everything – the economics, the day to day running of the estate, my welfare. When I had been younger he saw to it I was taught to read and write. I had not even considered these things until that moment, but then they just came on rushing through my mind and heart in waves that made me feel nauseous.
The rest of the day I felt like I was in a daze. The help had left us the previous night, probably giving up on waiting for us to come out of the drawing room and returning to their shacks, but they returned in the morning. Olivia and Hector found us both as still as each other, Father’s body in his favorite leather armchair and me frozen still at his feet, wishing I could roll time back. Would the priest or priestess or Justice See have a spell for that? I guess not, because surely they would have rolled back time until they were back in their homeland.
Eventually they took Father away. I thought I would have clung to his body and never let him go, but somehow I could not move. I felt like a still stone statue on the wooden floor. Besides, it was not truly Father. Father had gone, leaving just his shell.
I was led to my room to be washed and dressed before breakfast, and I allowed Gloria to do it all, without protesting that I could do it all myself or that I didn’t want anyone to wait on me. I did not get even a glimpse of Tanya or Justin on my way through the hallways to my suite of rooms, and I desperately wanted to see them. This was truly the time I needed them the most. But my mind had gone blank and I could not remember the fake names I had thought up, so I could not ask Gloria what had become of them. My mind was so fuzzed over it did not even occur to me to simply refer to them as ‘our visitors’, which would have been quite acceptable.
