TWENTY-ONE
âWhy do you think youâre here?â Adrian asks me as he fully enters the study Iâve been caught in, closing the door behind himself.
I am currently sitting behind his desk, and while I shouldnât be, Iâm comforted by the fact that there is something between us, just in case things get dangerous for me in a momentâs time.
âWhy am I here?â I repeat, and he nods. âTo help you look after your wife.â
Adrian doesnât blink as he keeps staring at me.
âAnd how do you think that is going?â
Iâm not sure what is going on. Is he mad at me for being in here? If so, heâs not shouted at me yet. He seems to be wanting me to evaluate my performance as his wifeâs nurse, though Iâm not sure if this is the time for it.
âItâs going okay, I guess,â I reply, hedging my bets and offering a safe answer, just to see what he does next.
âIs it, or are you simply trying to be polite?â
âErm.â
âTell me what you really think.â
âAbout Scarlett?â
âAbout everything. Her. Me. This house. Our life. What is your opinion on it?â
âMy opinion? Erm, Iâm not sure what you want me to say.â
âI want you to say the truth,â Adrian replies calmly.
All Iâm thinking is how I should have listened to Scarlett and stayed in my bedroom, but itâs too late for that. Adrian seems to be wanting me to open up to him, though I donât know what Iâm going to say. He says he wants the truth. But will he like it?
âI can leave,â I suggest, getting up from the chair, but Adrian raises his hand to tell me to stay where I am. So I do.
âNo, itâs okay. You donât have to go anywhere. Youâre not in any trouble, if thatâs what youâre worried about.â
âIâm not?â
Adrian shakes his head.
âI honestly just want to know what youâre thinking,â he says as he takes a couple of steps nearer to the desk. âTell me, Darcy. You can literally say anything here and Iâll accept it.â
Anything? Like how I think he and his wife are fakers and this is all some strange game?
Okay, here goes nothingâ¦
âIâm not sure Scarlett is really ill,â I reply nervously.
âYouâre not?â
âNo, I think sheâs faking her symptoms. I think you both are.â
âWhy do you think that?â
This is the tricky part â surely I canât be too honest and say that I was spying on them.
âCall it my professional opinion,â I say, which sounds vague, but also something a nurse could probably get away with saying.
âOkay, so what has led you to form this opinion?â
âJust my observations,â I reply, which is technically true. He doesnât need to know that one of those observations was through his lounge window when he didnât know I was out there.
âGive me details,â Adrian asks.
âDetails? Okay, erm. I think your wife is capable of much more than it seems. I know she looks all pale and tired when sheâs in bed, but sheâs not bedridden. She can get up and move around.
